Workshop Descriptions:
Workshop A: Getting Started with TI-Nspire™ CAS Technology
Presenter: Rodney Anderson
Description: Are you new to the TI-Nspire technology (calculator and computer software)? Attend this session to explore the basics and the many features of the individual applications that include Calculator, Graphs, Geometry, Notes, Lists and Spreadsheets and Data and Statistics. Learning the basics will give you confidence to use the technology in your classroom. This is a session where your questions are answered and you will be saying “I did not know it could do that”.
Workshop B: Concept development in Mathematical Methods
Presenter: Frank Moya
Description: The activities presented will demonstrate ways of using TI-Nspire™ CAS to enhance the teaching and learning of key topics in Mathematical Methods, with a focus on developing conceptual understanding. This will include the creation and use of dynamic documents and simulations.
Workshop C: TI-Nspire™ CAS and Specialist Mathematics Examination 2 2017
Presenter: Raymond Rozen
Description: In this session we will look at the questions from the 2017 Specialist Examination 2 and ways in which users of the TI-Nspire™ CAS calculators can benefit and save time in recording solutions and checking answers. Many of the multiple choice questions and parts of extended responses questions can be solved using pre-prepared notes pages.
Workshop D: Widgets and Wizards for General & Further Mathematics
Presenter: Brian Lannen
Description: Isn’t there an app for that? These days there usually is. With new operating system releases and ongoing refinement of the TI-Nspire™ platform, many standard numerical, financial and statistical procedures are streamlined into user-friendly step-by-step packages. A great deal of these are already programmed into the TI-Nspire and anything else can be tailor-made and stored as a widget for immediate recall within any future document. This session explores some of the pre-packaged wizards that are really helpful in supporting the General & Further Mathematics courses as well as demonstrating (and sharing) useful widgets for data analysis, finance, recursion, linear functions, unit conversions and trigonometry.
Workshop E: Thinking about functions graphically
Presenter: David Tynan
Description: It is not trivial for students to move from by-hand graphing of functions to technology assisted methods. In this session we consider the challenges, and how as teachers we can assist students to become more insightful about tasks with a significant function graphing component.
Workshop F: Notes Pages for Probability Distributions in Maths Methods
Presenter: Hayley Dureau
Description: This session will investigate the use of dynamic Notes pages on the TI-Nspire™ handheld, and their potential to enhance students' understanding of the various probability distributions covered in VCE Maths Methods. Learn how to teach your students to create their own unique notes pages, which can be saved on their handheld and taken in to the VCAA exams!
Workshop G: The game is not the same
Presenter: Jim Lowe
Description: The game of cricket has changed dramatically. With the recent surge in popularity of T20 games following other innovations, the changes since the seventies have been significant. Similarly, cricket media coverage, which has always been rich in the use of statistics, has changed to mirror the technology revolution taking place at the same time. Using real-life examples and real data is one way to encourage engagement with and excellence in mathematics. This workshop will highlight the connections between the graphs produced during TV coverage and those that can easily be produced using TI-Nspire™ technology to create and analyse real match data.
Workshop H: Using CAS to introduce difficult concepts to Units 3&4 Methods students
Presenter: Bozenna Graham
Description: How I used CAS in my Y12 Methods class to introduce difficult concepts such as solving equations with a parameter, function transformations, sampling and estimation, area under the curve and more.
Workshop I: General and Further Maths: Nspired Teaching and Learning
Presenter: Roger Wander
Description: In this session, the presenter will demonstrate the use of TI-Nspire™ files developed for both students and teachers, as seen in recent TI webinars. Core (bivariate data analysis) and Module (Graphs & Relations, Geometry & Measurement) content will be used to increase participants' pedagogical skills in using sliders, creating templates, and preparing students to use their Nspire technology effectively in assessment tasks.
Workshop J: Coding in the Victorian 7-10 Maths curriculum
Presenter: Frank Moya
Description: Participants will work through two coding activities - one suited to Years 7/8 and another suited to Years 9/10. We will also look at the recently published VCAA Sample Programs and explore ways in which coding activities might be seamlessly integrated into the maths curriculum.
Workshop K: TI-Nspire™ CAS and Mathematical Methods Examination 2 2017
Presenter: Raymond Rozen
Description: In this session we will look at the questions from the 2017 Mathematical Methods Examination 2 and some of the ways in which users of the TI-Nspire™ CAS calculators can benefit and save time in recording solutions and checking answers. Many of the multiple choice questions and parts of extended responses questions can be solved using pre-prepared notes pages. Participants will learn how to create these notes applications which can be used to answer typical examination questions.
Workshop L: Further/General Mathematics Core Study Areas units 1 & 3
Presenter: Sanjeev Meston
Description: TI-Nspire™ technology is a very powerful teaching and learning technology in the Mathematics classroom. This session will focus on the use of TI Nspire technology to enhance conceptual understanding of the Core study areas of Units 1 and 3 of the Further / General Mathematics course. Bi-variate data analysis, Linearising data by various transformations and Time-Series. Linear Recursion and Financial Modelling.
Workshop M: Coding Tasks for the Middle School
Presenter: David Tynan
Description: In this workshop, we will look at some examples of how coding and algorithmic thinking might be incorporated into middle school mathematic topics. All tasks have been trialled in the classroom!
Workshop N: Create – Explore – Explain
Presenters: Rodney Anderson, John Bament, Fred Fotsch, Peter Fox and Neale Woods
Description: Have you ever attended a workshop where you would like to spend a little more time just learning ‘how to’? This is your chance! This hands-on experience provides an opportunity to explore a range STEM and Formative Assessment solutions at your own pace. Facilitators will be available to introduce the range of equipment and activities available, help you get started or answer your questions. You get to choose which items you want to explore, how fast you want to progress and you can ask as many questions as you like! This is designed as a unique workshop experience where it’s all about YOU.
